Like Sanghamitta, Saint Lucy isn't so much a figure as a real person. She is the patron saint of blindness and is usually depicted holding a pair of eyes on a golden plate, along with a palm branch, which symbolizes victory over evil. On December 13, Saint Lucy's Day, girls in certain European countries will dress as the saint, wearing a crown of candles and carrying traditional sweets in a procession. This tradition stems from stories that say she carried food to persecuted Christians hiding in the catacombs, lighting her way with a wreath of candles on her head.
