This character appears in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, an Arthurian epic poem. During a Christmas feast in King Arthur's court, this guy basically crashes the party holding an ax in one hand and a branch of holly in the other. He's also literally green from head to toe. Th Green Knight challenges the round table knights to cut his head off if they have the guts the do it. Sir Gawain accepts and chops the guy's head off. And his response is to pluck himself (and his severed head) up and challenge the knight to face him again next year. 'Tis a flesh wound, indeed! You can read the whole story here.

Supposedly, the Green Knight is based loosely on the Green Man. You know what other comic features the Green Man? The Errant Apprentice. Go read it.
